National Treasures

National treasures is a phrase apparently given to those celebrities (surely now the most over used word in the English language!) who have won our hearts. They are those personalities who are more than a mere 'celeb'.

Past examples who are no longer with us would have included Terry Wogan, Alan Whicker and perhaps Cilla Black, irrespective of whether we liked them or not.

I should think current national treasures would include such folk as Trevor McDonald, David Attenborough, Judi Dench and my own 'grumpy old man' of sorts - Rick Wakeman. Jeremy Clarkson may have entered this particular Hall of Fame if he hadn't blown it last year!

Can you think of any more?

Re: National Treasures

They were (are) all just folks, who chose to throw their hat in the ring (for reward), no hero's here.

Re: National Treasures

What is most interesting, is the folks who, Apparently, have all the criteria, to take the world by storm, and can't be bothered.

Re: National Treasures

I think David Jason would qualify, I think these "National Treasures" are people, or should be, who a majority of us would mourn if they died.
David Attenborough would be the most missed I expect.

Re: National Treasures

I have always thought that David Attenborough fulfills that description.

Re: National Treasures

Not a fan of the term 'national treasures' those who do the most for society frequently go unsung.
The term is often applied to those who get well paid for just doing their job which just happens to be in the media.

I have heard Jimmy Savile described as a 'national treasure' , such titles should be given with care.
