Zaatari Refugee Camp

Now on BBC 2
Zaatari the huge refugee camp in Jordan
This amazing place is now a township the size of Bath.
It has 11 hospitals (who do seriously complicated surgery on war injured patients ) football pitches schools shops supermarkets bakeries ( the bakery is amazing it produces 90000 loves a day -bread is free and given out on a daily basis strictly on a ration basis etc. Even shops that sell wedding dresses .
Every person man woman and child gets £20 a month to spend on other food and things .
The two supermarkets are well stocked with food mostly local produce from Jordan
The people have made a life similar to what they have in Syria
The families live in portacabins .
The people are making a very brave and spirited attempt to build a life over 50% are under 18 and seem to have an wonderful zest for life despite all the troubles they have endured .
Zaatari is financed by the UN and various charities ( it costs £10 million a week )

Sounds a bit like a large-scale Nauru.
Just not a tropical island paradise.

No it doesn't .
Firstly the people are Arabs and they have made it just like an Arab town .
They are after all not far off their own homeland .
Tropical islands and I have lived on them most of my life can be tropical hell holes .
The people in Nauru are policed by the local people who are not of their culture and treat them cruelly .
In Jordan the people are of the same culture and the land is the same as in Syria these are desert people .
In Zaatari they have started small businesses and the whole set up is bustling and as near to normality as a camp can be .
PNG and Nauru are not places I would like to live the locals are not too far from the Stone Age and have nothing in common with people from the Middle East.

Re: Zaatari Refugee Camp

The people in PNG have trouble enough with their own people and the asylum seekers are resented.
People in these camps and those of Nauru have absolutely nothing to do and are in a alien culture with no hope of a future
But they are not in Australia which is exactly what the Australian government wants. - shift the problem on some far flung island .
Out of sight out of mind this is is not compassion this is cruelty.

Re: Zaatari Refugee Camp

Yep let all the Asylum Seekers who arrive in boats immediately settle in suburbia.

Great move. The Indonesian people-smugglers will love it
and thousands more men, women and children will drown at sea - some might even think that fairly cruel.

Getting back to that stupid "stone-age" comment though ....... ?
