Shakespeare Love him or hate him?

Hi

Politics is getting boring, a change of tack.

Well, do you love him or hate him?

I detest the man, having had my teenage years ruined by Drama and English Lit lessons based on his plays.

I can think of no other person who has been the source of so much misery to so many pupils around the World for so many years.

I mean, how many exam questions can there be about a handful of plays?

He has been discussed, dissected, argued about, interpreted to death.

There is no more useful that can be said about the man or any of his writings.

Time to forget about him and move on to something more interesting.

Agree or disagree?

A great question swim and one I was going to ask a few weeks ago after Shakespeare week and all that.

Personally, I don't 'get it'. I wish I did as it would make his plays more interesting to me.

Why were the plays not written in English?

I have never been a fan or WS (although it is sacrilege to admit this to some ) .

When I was about 12 we covered Macbeth in detail at school and I found it really tedious, just not my cup of tea.

Have grown to appreciate some of his work in my dotage which is surprising as we were forced to study MacBeth as part of my CSE (remember those? ) exams.

“Neither a borrower nor a lender be” — (Hamlet)

“Brave new world” — (The Tempest)

“Break the ice” — (The Taming of the Shrew)

“Brevity is the soul of wit” — (Hamlet)

“Refuse to budge an inch” — (Measure for Measure / The Taming of the Shrew)

“Cold comfort” — (The Taming of the Shrew / King John)

“Conscience does make cowards of us all” — (Hamlet).
