Best Before Dates to be Scrapped.

The Government is thinking about scrapping the
best before dates on food stuff.

Do you think this is a good idea?

We never had these dates before and common
sense should tell you if something is "off".

Re: Best Before Dates to be Scrapped.

It is an awful waste of food, which could have been used by homeless and other food agencies for people in poor countries who have nothing!

We never had that when I was a wee girl -we used common sense in those days!

The only thing is that some products do have a short shelf life and some have been on shelves for a while, perhaps shopkeepers should be made to put on the dates they bought it and put it on their shelves!!

Many thanks for the link.

Food rarely goes uneaten long enough in my house for me to worry about an expiration date.

Re: Best Before Dates to be Scrapped.

There was an item on some TV programme a few months ago about
a small company in the Leeds/Bradford (I think) area, they are making
a fortune advertising and selling out-of-date stuff, even fruit and veg.
A 24 can box of mixed cans was going fo around £1 as far as I can remember.

The waste of food is a total disgrace
'Date packed' might still be a good idea but I think I'd agree that 'Best Before' is unnecessary and wasteful
I'm afraid I eat it unless it's grown fur or smells to bad to get near. I'm still here to tell the tale

Re: Best Before Dates to be Scrapped.

Best before is different to the use by date.

Best before means just that, it wont be as tasty if eaten after the date stated - but the use by date is definite and important! especially on meat and dairy products.

I think the only good reason for keeping the use by date is simply because I don't think it is fair to buy food past its best when you are paying full price for what you can assume to be top condition!
