Where did your Surname come from?

Do you know how your surname came about?

Here is a site that will tell you.

Re: Where did your Surname come from?

When I was young I remember the idiot(the louse who spawned me) pontificating upon the heritage of the family name.

Burridge-from the old term for a bridge builder.

He was seldom,if ever, correct and that was wrong as well.

Re: Where did your Surname come from?

There is a village named after our family in the Lancashire area dating back to 1190 which is as far back as I have traced out family.

Re: Where did your Surname come from?

My surname is Irish - Northern Ireland but it is an ancient Scottish name as well. Dates back to the 1300's. My Dad told me the history of my name and according to the link what he told me was true!

Good site there, Mike, and thanks for sharing

A cousin of mine has traced our family history-the most noteable thing on my closest side is a distant relative being publicly flogged for theft

Re: Where did your Surname come from?

- a man who was in charge of purchasing and distribution of all food and provisions within a royal or noble household or a monastery

Sounds like me if food is involved - some for the royals, some for me!!!

I did secretly now where my surname came from, but that is a good site there. Thanks

Re: Where did your Surname come from?

I found that site myself; saw the question and researched it before answering. Mine's English, common in Nottinghamshire it says, traced back to the 1300s. My Dad's people were from Burton-on-Trent.

What an interesting thread!

Re: Where did your Surname come from?

Im recorded in the Doomsday book of 1086 as Anglo Saxon origin. I find this quite bizzare.. I know my very unusual name is also the name of a uk village but my grandparents were gypsies in Germany and i'd always been lead to believe it came from over there... hmmmm what a mystery!
