Boom

So as we were watching TV tonight both my wife and I jumped at what can only be described as a boom, loud enough to rattle the window, followed shortly by another boom, my son ,on the computer in the bedroom also heard it and said that made the window rattle in there too, so what was it??, I went outside and could hear a jet aircraft in the distance so I'm thinking sonic boom?, could it be aliens? Are they coming for me? Now I'm worried!!

Yes it was a sonic boom...
