C.A. delivers yet another blow to the DWP & Osborne

The Court of Appeal have issued a judgment on the illegality of forcing unemployed into 'voluntary' work. This will now entitle thousands of claimants illegally sanctioned to claim appropriate compensation.

It most certainly is not.
If there is a job to be done the companies should pay the going rate for it.

I agree Purwell but they are talking about voluntary work. By doing voluntary work this can lead to full time employment

Its equally a way to exploit those who are 'desparate'. Which is why the Court of Appeal ruled as it did. It was a device to exploit the unemployed and for the employers to obtain cheap (unpaid) work. Everyone needs to eat and if they are doing 'voluntary' work which by definition is unpaid, how are they supposed to 'live' and eat and look for 'paid' employment too.

Their benefits aren't cut though Joe. So why not do voluntary work

Absolutely everyone who is unemployed but fit should have to get out of bed in the morning and do some kind of voluntary work right down to litter picking and fence painting.
Everyone else has to work so why should the unemployed on benefits get something for nothing.

"Voluntary" work in supermarkets and discount stores is depriving someone of a wage. I repeat; if there is a job to be done a wage should be paid to do it.

I completely agree.

Some argue that giving them work to do (in return for their dole money) deprives others of their jobs.

But what about those jobs that either no-one wants to do or no businesses want to take on?

Many old people would appreciate someone helping them out at home: cleaning, gardening, doing small repairs, etc.
I see litter and graffiti all over the place. Local councils claim they can't afford to employ someone to clear it up (probably because they need the money to pay for their generous pay, junkets and pensions), so why can't unemployed people help out?

I'm sure there are many other examples of jobs that need doing but don't seem to get done.
