Illegally imported dogs

It appears that there is a new racket coming out of Eastern Europe .
Importing illegal dogs .
But saying they are bred in the uk
This is a real risk of bringing rabies into the country .
Apparently hundreds of dogs are being brought into the country in this way .

Not new its been going on for years .. They often take them into Belgium where false papers are made for them for the European market..

If the Schengen argreement does fall apart one of the positives is that it will make life more difficult for these flesh traders

Re: Illegally imported dogs

I have read there are many vets abroad who 'can be encouraged' to issue false vaccination papers too. I even read that these vets earn more from their 'sidelines' than they do from their legitimate wages.
They are stated as having their rabies jabs and they have not had any such thing.

As Cass says, it has been going on for a long time, especially with litters of puppies - van loads of them arriving, many dying en route as they are too young and in too poor a condition to cope with the journey.

I can't see any end to it either, as long as people keep buying pups without seeing any parent stock. Others are just looking for a cheap dog and don't care where it comes from. It makes me sick.

How do they get them in?
When we brought our rescue dog back to the uk he had to spend six months in quarantine .and he was fully vaccinated for rabies .

Re: Illegally imported dogs

Under the pet pasport scheme you can travel freely with dogs over the age of three months providing they have had the rabies vaccination and the vaccinations and flea tick and worm treatment is up to date.

However because of the lack of border controls some east Europeans have been found with transit type vans stacked jam full of tiny crates containing pups normally about 5 or 6 weeks old.
(Some time ago a shipment must have had problems and over 200 pups were found dumped by the side of the road, most were already dead from malnutrition or dehyradtion)

Some will inevitable get through customs undected and are then sold on for premium prices in the UK.

Another huge problem are Irish dogs bred on puppy farms in appaling conditions and shipped across to the uk because there is free travel between the UK and Ireland.

Re: Illegally imported dogs

You lot need politicians with balls - like our lovable rogue Barnaby Joyce (recently served as acting PM)

When Johnny Depp brought his two yappy little dogs into Australia on a private jet with no papers or permission or quarantine, Joyce said -
It’s time that Pistol and Boo buggered off back to the United States,”

Joyce gave Depp and his 'partner' a set time to get the dogs out of the country or they'd be 'euthanized'.
Might seem tough but we don't choose to import doggie diseases here just because some "celebrity" chooses to ignore the rules.
