Re: Wimbledon 2010
Whenever Wimbledon comes around my thoughts turn to a traumatic early evening in the 70's during which all my childhood illusions were turned upside down!.
I'd always enjoyed playing and watching tennis (and indeed any sport). I grew up on The Wirral so at the age of 13 or so went to The West Kirby Open for the first time. The WK Open was a bit like Queens now, a grass court warm up (on, I think, Council courts!) just before Wimbledon.
Mostly for the the top women (Wade, King, Casals, Goolagong, Court etc) but I saw some of the top men (Newcombe and Roche) too.
At the age of 13 or so I had barely heard anyone swear or seen a 'grown up' throw a tantrum. It, in a very sexist way, simply didn't occur to me that women were capable of swearing! Well my illusions were soon shattered. The choice language and tantrums really did shock me at the time - obviously as I still recall now some 41 years later!
I never saw Virginia Wade et al in the same light again!
