I was in the Forces in the 70s and the trials at Porton Down were not only voluntary, but the volunteers got extra pay for attending. I recall seeing several lads with circular scars on their arms from 'chemical' tests.
Not detracting from your comments, but it is also possible that the some of the cause of the attrition rate of 'soldiers' from the 50s dying in their 50s and 60s was due to the huge amount of smoking and drinking at the time, and that they had probably just come through the war too.
