Boaty McBoatface

I can't help smiling at the story about the poll to name a new research vessel
Article from The Independent here

NERC was looking for a name to reflect the ship's prowess in the oceans, symbolising the pioneering work they will undertake.

When thinking of submissions, they advised: “We're looking for an inspirational name that exemplifies the work it will do.

“The ship could be named after a local historical figure, movement, or landmark - or a famous polar explorer or scientist.

We would like the name to be inspirational and about environmental and polar science, to help us tell everyone about the amazing work the ship does.”

So, of course, it really had to be Boaty McBoatface

Everyone has had a bit of fun, they've got a ton of publicity and, when push comes to shove, the worthy folk at the Environmental Research Council will jettison Boaty for a 'proper' ship's name.

Is it a British thing, or would other nations have enjoyed a similar joke?

My son has been following this on Twitter!
We've had such a giggle over it!
The second in the poll received around 65000 fewer votes!!
I think one suggestion was RRS Attenborough

Personally I think RRS Boaty McBoatface has quite a splendid ring to it

Re: Boaty McBoatface

I was not without a flicker of disappointment to see that, despite massive public support for the internet poll-winning name "Boaty McBoatface" the Navy have gone with Sir David Attenborough as the chosen name for their new research vessel.
Boaty McBoatface is what they will call one of the on-board mini submarines!

It may have a more respectable ring to it....
But I think they really missed a trick there!

Re: Boaty McBoatface

Spot on it was the peoples choice overridden by the establishment. Im a bif fan of Sir David Attenborough , one of the few celebs that deserve a knighthood, but i loved the name Boaty McBoatface.
