Computer problems

I have put this thread onto here just so that everyone can see it as I know everyone does not possibly look at the Computer board.

I would like to suggest that everyone checks their personal settings/passwords etc.

The computer that I use for the internet has been compromised.

This morning when I tried to log onto my bank account it would not let me so, after several attempts I eventually went to the banks help line and got onto it through them. I now have visit a branch of the bank and change my security details.

I have two firewalls, antivirus, anti-malware and a register check which lets me know if any part of my register changes.

The Bank says it is a virus that has caused it and that I should check my computer.
I have and there is no virus, no malware and no register change so I am not sure what has caused it.

I could not even log onto here without changing my password and that took several attempts.

I am now going off line until I check through my register to see if there is any strange data that should not be there.

Unless you know what you are doing please dont go into your computers register

I will see you all again when I have finished.

That isn't necessarily so. It could be a firewall problem. Running two isn't usual. They could conflict and possibly block something that needs permission to access the Internet for normal running. What usually happens is that when you install a third party firewall, it disables the Windows firewall (because both can conflict with each other). In fact, if you have a router, you are like be likely to be behind three firewalls at present. So you could first try disabling the Windows firewall.

I realise you may have been running this way OK up to now but sometimes glitches happen and settings change. Something like that could have happened.

If you have scanned your computer with your arsenal of anti-malware programs (what are they?), then it seems likely not to be a virus, although I'd be foolish to say it absolutely isn't.

The bank won't take any chances and will want you to change your login details as a matter of course. Virus or not, they won't take a chance.

Unless you know for certain you have an infection and know its name, it could be difficult to know what to look out for in the Registry. It might be worth looking in Add/Remove Programs to see if there is anything there you don't recognise.

Have you tried using another browser? It's often useful to have more than one installed on occasions like this.

Re: Computer problems

I was gonna say you don't need to run two firewalls too - in fact, I think it may break things if you do

Hope you get it sorted soon.

Re: Computer problems

Grant is fixing my pc at the moment - my motherboard went for a burton on Friday of last week! He ordered me a new one and it was delivered to his place yesterday. He fitted it last night and I get my own tower unit back then!! I am using his laptop at the moment, using my own keyboard, mouse and screen as I can't use the keyboard of a laptop very well. Keys are too flat and too close together for me to use comfortably with my left hand. I type with my left side of my fingers on my left hand since an accident at work where I had a bad fall and a bad break in my arm!! Bone still sticks out like a lump on my wrist!!

Many thanks AB for the info! I don't ever go into anything since once I did something and my pc crashed and I lost everything!!

Take care and hope you get things all fixed on your pc's registry!

Re: Computer problems

After going through around 25,000 files with a few more thousand to check, wearing out my finger and I am sure the F3 button, deleting about 150 orphan files plus some files I did not recognise I decided that the simplest way was to re-format my hard drive, which is not easy as this computer is a mixture of computers and it will not re-format with just the XP disc, it needs files from other OS systems. I could not put Windows 7 on here as it need upgrading to accept it. A job for another day.
I am now back but with limited use until I find all my Bookmarks again. I deleted my network immediately I found out about the problem to protect my other computer. I did not want to save files to an external hard drive due to the unknown so all I save was some 800 photos.
Having done all, that I am not convinced that the problem was mine after I talked with the bank. They say that they are still investigating the problem as other people have had the same thing happen to them.

That was my problem in a way. Having possibly sorted my problem I found I had no bookmarks plus I had to try to remember my password.
Same problem for other group boards that I belong to.
