Squeeze the Melon

I was at the market yesterday in the fruit section trying to pick out a ripe melon. There are a few tricks of the trade people use to test if a melon is ripe or not for eating. Some give it a few kncks. I guess something about how it sounds is suppose to rell you something and others just give the melon a smell. I am more of a traditional guy. I look for size and then I give it a squeeze. That sort of works for me...

Re: Squeeze the Melon

That could be true depending on what one puts in his mouth and if bigger is better.

Re: Squeeze the Melon

I agree with you, Alan. Pears taste better then melons. Plus, with pears, you sort of get what you see. I remember one time I was looking for a ripe melon. I squeezed here and I squeezed there and the damn thing blew up in my face.

Re: Squeeze the Melon

The last time I squeezed a pear Painter I got told off. The market-stall holder said "someone's got to eat that when you've finished fondling it "!

I would then recommend you buy your pears in a can. They come mixed with a sweer nectar syrup. Beats getting barked at by the grocery dude

Re: Squeeze the Melon

You have to be careful in supermarkets as packets with fruit like nectarines in have a "soft" egg box like cardboard holder for them which when you test the softness of the fruit through the packet gives you a false sense of ripeness...Ive often bought these and found the nectarines to be underipe and harder once out of the packaging

Re: Squeeze the Melon

No two melons are identical Emjay!

And the trick is to press your thumbs on them....if they're springy you've got sweet ones
