Maria Sharipova, drugs cheat?

Announces she failed doping test.

The richest female in sport($30m per year)has been taking the once legal drug for 10 years, was taken without her knowing it had been banned.

Thanks to all of the drug-enhanced cheating, sports are no longer interesting to me.

i was shocked to listen to her press conference last night - and like you cant believe she didnt open her email or that one of her many entourage didnt inform her plus it had been in the pipeline since Autumn that this drug was going to be made illegal
i love tennis and this is another downer for this sport - everyone is going to be thinking when someone wins "what are they taking"

Not quite accurate. This was a drug which she had been taking quite legally for 10 years. It was only banned from 1st January 2016. She had been prescribed the drug by her family doctor under a different name and didn't realise that the drug she was using was a banned drug - Meldonium.
A mistake certainly - a stupid mistake possibly- but given her status in the game and her reputation for being an ultra-clean athlete, it is very unlikely that this was deliberate use of a performance enhancing substance.

I'm amazed that her trainer or manager or someone, wasn't sufficiently familiar with the drugs she was taking and the listing of banned drugs, to have tracked this drug and been aware of it's reclassification. Still, mistakes happen and I believe this is one.

My first thought was cheat but listening to the facts I am erring on the side of mistake, one thing I did wonder was do these drugs cause grunting because that might explain something I have been puzzled by for years.

Wont condemn her, could be a genuine mistake, time will tell.
