What a fragile species we are

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_disasters

I was looking for some info on a North sea disaster from a couple of hundred years ago and found this list.

Food for thought when you see the amount of souls lost in one disaster. Could nature ever be tamed? Or are we making things worse for ourselves in the future?

That's amazing when you see it listed like that, PPH

We have a lot to be thankful for in this country...

What surprises me is how recent some of them are - within living memory. 4000 people killed in a blizzard in Iran in 1972????? How come I don't remember? Is it because the further away from home it is, the less likely you are to remember?

There was less media hysteria back then PPH - these days the media are like vultures, all that sensationalist reporting gets on me nerves a bit

That is very true Azz. Still, all those poor people, you would think it would stay in people's memory

Yet everybody remembers the Titanic even though the loss of life was small compared to most on the list. Maybe it's because they made so many films about it?. Would that tragic event be called a natural disaster or human error?, who knows.
