Re: Occupations in the past

My father was an aeronautical engineer (in the RAF during WWII)

My mother had too many jobs to list here, did the dairy on her father's farm (from milking to milk-delivery), library assistant, child-minder, school dinner-lady, bank clerk, accounts clerk ...
(I can't remember them all).

Paternal grandfather was a barrister (I never met him, he died before I was born).

Maternal grandfather was an insurance clerk, then in the Navy (1914-19), farmer, then in the Army (1939-45), then in the Civil Service.

Maternal grandmother was a clerk in the Civil Service, then farmer's wife (which involved quite a lot of farmwork of course in those days), then back to the Civil Service.

Re: Occupations in the past

My maternal grandparents had a farm in Derbyshire, I don't know much about them they died before I was born and my Mother soon after.

My Father was a very clever man held back by poverty. He worked in the quarry that my Grandad rented cutting and dressing stone then went to night school where he learnt bookkeeping and shorthand. This enabled him to work as a storekeeper for various companies.
My paternal Grandmother was in service as a ladies maid.

Re: Occupations in the past

My father wanted to be an opera singer maybe because that was his ticket out of the country. He really did not have the chords to sing, eventually emigrating to America where he became a member of the Gambino family out of New York. Worked the casino racket in Vegas and I did see on some ocassions some of his Italian buddies kiss his ring, so he might of been a head boss for a short time of an Italian Family..Fortunately for him he was never assasinated, living out his years in a beach front home. My mother was the typical Italian wife who cooked, kept her nose out of her husbands life and went to church every Sunday.

Sounds like a Godfather movie, right ? All Italians are either wannabe mobsters or watch way too many Godfather movies
