We'll all live like milionaires by 2050

Maybe more relevant to our children and grandchildren, but nonetheless a fascinating paper published by the Adam Smith Institute yesterday

Here's a wodge from the text but it's worth a glance at the whole paper, either to be amazed or repelled at what they see

People in the UK will be earn twice as much in real terms by 2050 as they do today. An average 2% annual growth rate will achieve this. The people of 2050 will live at the standard of today’s millionaires.

Agriculture will have experienced a green revolution, with genetically modified crops that are self-fertilizing, pest-resistant, saline tolerant, drought resistant, altitude capable, heat tolerant and cold tolerant, and ones that can grow on land previous thought insufficiently fertile. Many of these will be developed in UK laboratories and universities, as will trees that can mature in 6 years instead of 50. Tree cover will be many times what it is today.

New genetically hybridized vegetables will be available to eat, the paper says, as will inexpensive lab-grown meats, bringing an end to factory farming as we know it and delivering substantial environmental gains, as well as freeing up large amounts of land for recreational use. Micro-organisms will be developed to produce nourishing food very cheaply and in abundance.

The author was on the radio yesterday, sounding quite confident of his prophesies and inviting us to think of the changes over the last generations and project them forward

That's the way I look at it.

Just think, we can remember when computers were as big as warehouses, worked with punch cards and could do barely more than run a payroll - now we carry all the knowledge of the world round in our pocket!

The amount of money one makes is revalant to the inflation of the time. In 2050 everything will cost us double if not triple of what we pay today. Our salaries will double or triple to keep up with inflation, so in reality, we will make more money, but we will all still remain poor bastards trying to make ends meet

If the future depends on GM crops I'm glad I will not be alive to eat them.

Re: We'll all live like milionaires by 2050

It sounds pretty good for the future but they have not factored in the main antagonist to this theory......Us, the human race. We are a troublesome bunch and all the 'Save The Planet' brigade will be protesting about all this GM stuff. We can't even agree where our energy is going to come from in 2050. Bearing in mind the ever growing population there won't be much farmland left in the UK after we have concreted over most of it to accommodate all the extra houses. Fast growing trees and crops will deplete the ground of all of it's nutrients leaving it much like the surface of the moon. And as the rich get richer, the poor will get poorer increasing poverty and slums. The well off will have to live in secure compounds as the need for food becomes greater. The less well off will have to forage for food and crime will become a major issue as the have not's will try and steal from the have's - much the same as they do now to feed their addictions.

I believe that the human race will be severely routed over the next fifty years, either by nature or our own hand. The pace and speed of progress has not been linear and it can not continue speeding up at the present rate. Something is coming, and hell is coming with it!

Probably the same geezer who said Robots in the workplace would create the wealth to be shared among the populace.

Yeah alright.

Oh yes, everyone would be working from home ...

The only way we'll be living like millionaires here is if all the nasty dirty work we don't want to do is done half the world away, much of it by children who hardly get any schooling.

The ideas sound a bit unachievable to me.
As we defeat one problem another arises like some new virus or pest which has the potential to wipe out crops ......or us.

Such is life...
