Elevators

People seemingly walk into a elevator without a worry in the world. Thats because elevators are like airplanes. We know bad things can happen in a elevator, but we have no other alternative but to get in one.

Once inside this tin box with wire aparatus, we realize that the door shuts behind us. There we are crammed shoulder to shoulder with complete strangers who are occupying our personal space. So, not wanting to create an impersonal encounter into a personal one, you do everything in your power to avoid eye contact. Thus, you find yourself looking at the floor, the roof, or the passing floor number indicator. As your mind silently cries out.. " I want to get the hell out of this damn box ! "

The fear of course is that the elevator will stall and that you will remain trapped for hours and then, the dreaded nightmare kicks in, your need to go to the bathroom.

So what do you do, avoid the elevator all together and just use the stairs ? Its a thought, but there is no going around it. Its like a plane, there is a fear in the back of our mind, yet we take the elevator anyway.

Look at it this way, if something bad is going to happen, it will occur crossing the street, in our car and yes, even in a dreaded elevator. Word of advise though, next time you walk into one, be a bit more prepared and wear protective adult undergarments.

Re: Elevators

I wouldn't say it was without a worry in the world, even if it's one you've often been on before.

Re: Elevators

Since my operations last year, ive used them a lot of late. They raise me to a higher plane, otherwise i would be stuck in the gutter.

Most conversation with my fellow travelers have been brief, and on the odd occasion ive been stuck in one then talk can drag on a bit.

Mind i dont think about the vagaries of mechanical devices, "there be dragons"

When I lived in Spain most buildings were very old and so were the elevators. I remember the elevator I use to take. It was an antique of sorts. At the most, 2 or 3 people could fit in. Made of a dark brown polished wood and glass all around. When you hit the go button, the elevator always gave a jump and when it stopped it was abrupt. Got stuck more than once in that elevator. Had to ring the emergency bell to get out. Door man would slowly release the brake till the elevator made it to the ground floor

I don't mind using them, well have to really!
What I don't like is all the mirrors that they seem to put in them. There's this plump old lady that keeps following me in!

Yes, I've worked in places where they'd stop with a jolt, very painful. And then they'd break down and take ages to get repaired.

Here in Miami, I will ocassionally visit a high rise building. Those elevators shoot up fast like a rocket. The experience is like a rollercoaster ride where your ears pop

I guess they put mirrors inside the elevator for obvious reasons. People will not acknowledge one another, so at the very least, they will admire their reflection in the mirror

Re: Elevators

There used to be an open one in Fairfax House ( large Co-op store) in Bristol which you had to jump on and off, it was deadly!

There is one elevator I don't mind traveling in. Its located sort of outside the building surrounded by glass. So as you travel up, you have a great view of the city
