Calling Builders..or anyone who knows..

Could you please explain something that's bothered me for years.

Re semis - why do they always seem to build them putting lounges on the party wall instead of halls? Is there a reason, like saving on materials or something?

It's easier and cheaper to build a shared chimney(party wall) than build individual ones for each house?

This is a great question, and tbh I can only guess.

Though not every semi has an entrance hall in that position. Some are central, some are to the side.

Not all semis have chimneys though, especially new ones?

Not sure about this, but if you live in a terrace, a lounge would have to join next doors, so why not a Semi.

Fewer external walls so less heat loss?

This is a question for the architects, great question though.

Re: Calling Builders..or anyone who knows..

Spitfire, it's just that there seems to be more semis with lounge to lounge and very few halls to halls.

I'm thinking about neighbour noise perhaps being less if its hall to hall and I've puzzled SO long trying to work out why it's lounge to lounge. Years in fact. Really I have!

Perhaps it because I grew up in a semi and I remember hearing their cuckoo clock every hour or something.

I'd give anything to know why.

Having spent the last five years living in a semi det. bungalow next to an extremely noisy neighbour i will make sure it never happens again on my next move.

But how can there be fewer external walls when you're just changing the inside layout?
