Which era...

My friend has gone to the cinema today and it got me thinking ...I always say im going to the "pictures" and some people say the movies others say the cinema,and yet still others call it the flicks,is it something to do with which era you were born in?

What do you call it? or maybe you dont ever go to the "pictures"

I never use the American word 'movies'.
I go to the cinema to see a film!
Flicks is just an old fashioned English slang word for cinema isn't it?

I say, going to the movies. Don't know why I say that, because really the movies don't move, do they ? Well, in a way. They move, while you sit on your butt and watch the movie move.

In Swedish we call it "bio" (from biograf) but in English I say "cinema".

Interesting AO ive never heard of "bio" before I sometimes say "cinema" too but "the pictures" just rolls of my tongue without thinking lol

"Movies" comes from "moving pictures" which is exactly what a film is .... still pictures in motion .... or motion pictures.

I went to school in Manchester and everybody called it "the pictures" so maybe it is an area thing, because I lived in Cheshire and most there called it the cinema.

Ohh odd Twink as I am in Norfolk down here and I have always said "the pictures" too ...perhaps ive some Mancunian blood in me somewhere
