A lovely gesture.

As some of you know I work as a home carer. This summer one of my elderly ladies suffered a fall which resulted in a perforated/ruptured intestine.
She needed emergancy surgery and spent over 8 weeks in hospital.

She is German by birth and all her family still live there shes widowed and has no children so I kept visiting her in hospital took her fruit and did her bits of laundry ..
I also telephoned her family in Germany to keep them informed when she was in ICU.

Yesterday I received a package from Germany with a lovely pashmina type shawl and a note from this lady's neice saying how much my calls had meant to them and how lucky they felt to have me looking out for their aunt.

Sometimes its not about status or big pay packets, its about knowing that you made someone feel better even if it was just with a phone call..

So yes I know I do crap job, with crap hours and crap wages but to some people it is important..

Re: A lovely gesture.

That is lovely Cass. I, like most people, know all the "jokes" re the Germans, but we have some wonderful German friends and neighbours and when we lived in Kenya the Germans who lived there were far nicer and more helpful to us than any of the British community. It does make you feel good when you know you have made someone happy. Oh, and by the way, you do not do a crap job, you do one of the most worthwhile jobs there can be, it takes special people to do such jobs, so consider yourself special. Happy Christmas.

Cass, people of your calibre are becoming few and far between.
There are so many 'takers' in this world and that was a lovely tribute from the German family.

My mum had 2 good German friends and they were also thoughtful

Re: A lovely gesture.

you do NOT do a Crap job, you do a very important job and without caring people like yourself this world would be a poorer place real carers with genuine concern for their clients are worth their weight in gold and should be paid accordingly although I know that you are not. thank you on behalf of all the people that need carers.
