Coal miners

I would just like to say to the coal miners in North Yorkshire that finished their last shift this morning that im sure the great British public feel for you i know i do. It must really hurt knowing that coal is coming into the country from foreign lands instead of being mined here where it has been for so many years by whole family members. Such a great shame😢

Re: Coal miners

Having done 16 years underground I think it's a good thing that all deep mines are shut. No more will British men have to do that unhealthy, dirty and dangerous job. It's sad that men have lost their jobs but in the long term it's a good thing.

Re: Coal miners

Alan im sure those miners would be very happy hearing you say that! Its a job and it pays the bills thats all these poor sods want a job to keep a roof over their heads. They were happy doing the job otherwise why would whole families follow each other down the mine.
A jobs a job far better than being out of work surely.☺

Re: Coal miners

I agree, but if nobody wants to buy what you are producing how can that job continue? If work is no longer there it's far better that the bad jobs finish rather than the good jobs IMO. As to generations following each other into the mining industry, that's because they did that years ago, people have wider horizons nowadays.

Re: Coal miners

My ancestors were coal miners and the mines killed them. Anyone who wants to return to mining coal is a sadist.

Re: Coal miners

I feel sad for them, but agree that its probably for the best
Hate the thought of anyone having to rely on this terrible work for a living
always made me sad to think of it
I hope there is something worthwhile for them ...........

Plenty of jobs available as burger flippers on zero hour contracts.

Re: Coal miners

I can't believe all the pits have gone now. Something must be very wrong if coal from abroad is cheaper than from home, with freight too.

Re: Coal miners

How many of you had ancestors, grandparents etc. whose health or limbs or both were destroyed in pits. I hate the mines for what they did to my family.
