Did Beeching get it wrong.

Did Beeching get it wrong, we are now suffering with loss of some lines and stations, this year alone we have opened many old lines and built a station.
This has already cost a fortune, with £234 million on 30 miles of line, and £80 million on a new station, plus another £80 billion for HS2.
It wouldn't have been so bad if things had been mothballed, but sadly it wasn't.
What do you think, this is a link from 2 years agohttp://www.expressandstar.com/news/2015/04/03/how-dr-beeching-got-it-so-wrong/

The link is about lady c leaving the jungle but yes I believe we should have protected the rails and been building new ones all along. Get people and goods off the roads.

Canals too should be vibrant and active still.

Unfortunately trains and barges don't call at every shop or builders' yard like lorries can. To transfer freight would push up transport costs considerably I imagine (could you research this for me Mark?)

Re: Did Beeching get it wrong.

Yes, I always thought it was wrong even though I was a kid
at the time.

It was to save money. That turned out to be wrong especially
if this Government get away with spending the billions they are
planning on the new HS2 line.

It might cut half an hour off the longest journey. Wow that much
In the meantime, millions of people, trees, fields, wild animals
and peoples brains will be frazzled by the amount of work it will
take.

Have these cosy politicians ever thought that some idiot wanting
to see a crash could put something on the line and crash these
100 and odd miles an hour trains. What then. Oh sorry dead people.

My opinion of course but you might also agree with this waste of money.

This is a no brainer for me to answer Wrinkly.
The answer is a big fat YES!
It would take me far too long to go into all the reasons why, as thankfully, I still have a live to live.
But again YES!
He did!

Monster mistake taken with little thought for the needs of the future. Then with much of the track now built on, that is it I guess.

Re: Did Beeching get it wrong.

Definitely. At the time he / they underestimated the volume of traffic that would clog up our roads in the future.
