Aged 96, smoked 60 cigarettes a day too. Former German chancellor. Erudite, arrogant, almost professional concert pianist, intellectually more than a match for Margaret Thatcher. Moved out of power by skulduggery letting Helmut Khol's party in.

I remember reading years ago in 2013 that he'd stockpiled 38,000 menthol cigarettes in preparedness for an EU ban on them.
I wonder if it was true?

I read that too, was very tempted to do it myself (I believe they are being banned in the UK in 2022?).

Never followed his life at all, other than that news article, but nevertheless I hope he had a peaceful death.

I think the end of his political career was very nasty, by skulduggery to get Helmut Kohl in power. Some say he was too clever by half. I was interested byestander as I visited germany occasionally on holidays and business.
