Mothers day!!

Is it just me?????
I think it a load of b----cks.
I am a mum 365 days a year, I don't need a special day, I am special every day.
My Mum is special every day
I think it is a money making racket.
I have never sent or recieved a mothers day card.
I hate society dictating to me when to spend my money

I bought my mum some choccies a few weeks ago, it was a spontaneous gesture and she was delighted, she wont be getting anything on Sunday, but it doesn't mean I love her any less. she will be coming for dinner as she always does.

and as for Fathers day and grandparents day...........don't get me started

Re: Mothers day!!

Like you I have always thought this was a money making racket - and I have never celebrated this day on my own behalf .
But when my mother died and my oldest cousin (20 yrs older than me) said to me; "now that you have no parents I will be your mother" - this felt so good that I have brought her flowers or smth else on mothers day ever since - just like I used to do when my mother was alive.

Re: Mothers day!!

My son (who shares my cynicicm of this event) calls it the Hallmark Holiday!
It tends to happen about the date of my late dad's birthday and my parents wedding anniversary, so I have been dilligent in sending mum a (plain) card and some flowers - but not for THAT Sunday, just to mark those dates

Re: Mothers day!!

I agree it's all commercial clap trap as far as I'm concerned but my dear old Mum celebrates the christian Mothering Sunday and would be mortified if we ignored it.....anyway....it's nice to give and we get pleasure just seeing her relish all the attention.

Re: Mothers day!!

I must be the odd one out as I love Mothers Day!

Yes, the card companies make a fortune out of it, the same as they make a fortune out of cards for your cat or dog, your teacher, stopping smoking etc. etc.

To me Mothers Day is something special, not trivial ..... we all love/loved our Mums and the majority do show it all year but on that one day it makes it that little bit extra special. The children love making cards and buying a small gift for their mums, I did when I was at school. I receive Mothers Day cards from my grandchildren also, plus a little gift that they have lovingly made themselves for me.

We are all going out as a family for a Mothers Day lunch on Sunday which my daughter and I, as Mums, are really looking forward to.

Mothers Day has been around since the early 1900's and I hope it continues for many more years!

Saying that though, I do appreciate that it won't have the same meaning to those who have lost their Mums or have no children.

Re: Mothers day!!

As with Womens Day - I think they can stick their Special Day... and I`ll have the other 364, thankyou.
It`s a festival hijacked by the Card industry.

Re: Mothers day!!

I'm with you on this one Mags. Yes it is a money racket business but it's still nice to celebrate. I always buy my Mum and MIL a present and card.

I've bought my Mum this year those dusters in a shape of a hand, their washable, you just put them on like a glove and dust away. I got her two lots, different colours. I think she'll like them. It's something different anyway.

Re: Mothers day!!

I'm with the majority view here and I did laugh (rather cynically) at the M&S advert for a mothers day "treat" on TV last night, where the WHOLE family sits down to an M&S meal... now apart from this not being a treat specifically for the mother... who is supposed to cook it????????

As for being christian, not all of us are and sometimes you can't stop people buying you presents even though you tell them not to.
