I seem to remember this law being changed here
Is that right ?

I think you are right Patsy. A person can now be charged more than once for the same crime as were those who murdered Stephen Lawrence.

Yes I think there was a case before Stephan too

Watched a docu on a murder trial in America
He was found not guilty because the 'witness' testimony was not believed - he was charged later - when further evidence proved his guilt - of perjury !
The double jeopardy law was active there, so he only got a few years
When he came out, he fell on a glass coffee table severing arteries and died - justice was served

I believe a second trial can only be held if 'significant' new evidence comes to light, that might have secured a conviction the first time around.

If new evidence can prove the same murder to that person
then they can be tried again hence the double jeapardy

In the programme, he could not be tried 'again' for the murder due to double jeopardy law - ridiculous
So they had to get him on merely 'perjury'
Fortunately he popped his clogs anyway ........

Whoever decided that ruling was out of their tree !
