Nitro Tyres !

We had to have 2 new tyres put on the car yesterday
On the left of the invoice was the description 'Nitro'
'Be careful going over the speed bumps' says I
Its OK - says Fabs - on the right it says 'Nitrogen inflation' - we'll be alright ...............

So my question is - why have they started filling the tyre with nitrogen, the cost is a £1 per tyre, OK that's fine, just curious to know the advantage of it ........................

Re: Nitro Tyres !

The real reason is because Nitrogen is more stable than air - although air is comprised of about 79% Nitrogen.

Using Nitrogen means the pressure in the tyres will be more stable and is harder to permeate through the rubber and removes water vapour from inside the tyre, which can lead to corrosion.

Thanks for the info Graham
Does this mean the pressure in the tyre stays better and so no need to top the air up .........?

Theoretically, yes. But it can still leak out if you have a puncture somewhere.

So, after a few months - would it be wise to top up with nitrogen at the garage - or top up the air as normal
Its a habit Fabs does, top up the air when he feels the time is right ............

Re: Nitro Tyres !

I would assume it would best to top up with nitrogen, or you would lose the benefits of having nitrogen tyres in the first place.

Yep - makes sense - will see when need be, if the garage will do that

Re: Nitro Tyres !

Another load of cobblers, like the new tyre pressure indicator valves which can be MOT failures and cost up to £100 each.
