Trucks vs Cyclists

Heard on the radio today that trucks will have to be fitted with extra mirrors and 'side bars' as an aid to prevent casualties of cyclists.
Any idea what these side bars are ?

Re: Trucks vs Cyclists

As a cyclist (as well as a driver), I think that many of my fellow cyclists should be fitted with brains. That might reduce accidents considerably. I am constantly amazed at the stupidity and the arrogance of some of my fellow cyclists who treat traffic lights as optional and think that undertaking a lorry turning left is a reasonable manoevre.

I'm only guessing Patsy, but I'm wondering if its bars along the side of the lorry that stick out a little way so that if it had an accident and ended up on its side, it wouldn't lay completely flat on the road, the bars would prop it up a little so they could pull someone out in an emergency. Bit like the roll bars over tractor cabs.
I could be completely wrong though.

Re: Trucks vs Cyclists

Many lorries have signs saying if you can't see the driver the driver can't see you, IMO that should be enough to stop cyclists trying to under take and over take them but it doesn't. Steven drives a white van and these days he says he just sits back at junctions and waits for the brainless cyclists to do what they want before he tries to cross, they are going to do it anyway so safer for everyone if they just have the junction free to do it.

Times has a graphic explaining it all http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/public...cle3860846.ece

Re: Trucks vs Cyclists

The fact is that it's easier for the cyclist to avoid the lorry, and some cyclists have no consideration of other road users.

Don't get me started about cyclists, especially on country roads! Anyway, do cyclists have to obey speed limits? I get overtaken by them in 20 mph zones often!

If some of the lycra louts obeyed the highway code there would be no need for all these extra safety measures.

This is true, we have had 2 cycle pavements built opposite each other, still the 'odd' one weaves in and out on the road

Re: Trucks vs Cyclists

I'm not sure it's just the lycra wearers, worse cycling I witnessed on the way home last night was a lady struggling along with a trailer she had no intention of stopping or signalling at all, scary thing was she had a child strapped to her back too and as it was getting dark no lights either.
