From 1531 to 1547, cooking someone to death as a punishment was permitted under "Statute 22", and 'William Boilman' joined the list of nicknames by which executioners came to be known.
The precise recipe is now lost to history, but poisoners William Roose in London, and Margaret Davy in King's Lynn are thought to have taken around two days to die, suggesting the process began with cold water or oil.
