Roman ruins

A historic site? No it isn't ..well not dating back the Roman times anyway. These Roman stones and columns and were transported to the British Museum from Leptis Magna, Libya in 1816. They were moved from there to Virginia Water, Surrey in 1826. How difficult must all that have been?!

An overall view. There are a few more stones/carvings to be seen through the tunnel.

Re: Roman ruins

I used to be very against this sort of thing but looking at the destruction now it could be UK houses more antiquities than the home countries do at the end of this war so it seems very worthwhile they did it.

Re: Roman ruins

I agree with you Julie, but the wholesale destruction of antiquities now in the Middle East is devastating mankind's heritage and we need to preserve as much as we can for future generations.

Re: Roman ruins

It is so sad to see the destruction that is going on abroad, these things are gone forever and they are losing their heritage.
