Old Remedies

Carol's thread on Dandelions, made me think of a thread about old fashioned remedies and 'cures' from Grandma's day and beyond.

Can anyone remember some?

Being a walker, yes I know it definitely works OG. Thank goodness. Nettle stings are nasty.

Same here OG, it did seem to work, but not sure if it was in the mind.

Horse liniment for bad back / sprains, dolly blue bag for wasp stings, and olive oil for earache, just heard that one being recommended by the receptionist at the GP`s for a guy wanting his ears syringed.

I once saw an item about this in a medical programme on BBC 2 and apparently the dock leaves were tested and can work against nettle stings because they contain some kind of anti irritant/ antihistamine substance.

My friend is a great believer in the power of garlic. She reckons she made a wart disappear by rubbing a slice of raw garlic on it a few times a day.

Re: Old Remedies

My Grandma always made a paste with Bicarbonate of soda and then use it on heat lumps or chicken pox, it worked too and I used it when my daughter was young when ever she had heat lumps.
