Big ships

Can't get the whole ship in one photo!

The rest of it. It is actually a older laker front with a tug boat welded into the stern for power...it is well over 1000 foot long and probably carries iron ore or some carry wheat. I saw this one a week or so ago on it's first trip down the lakes this year. I heard Lake Superior had 9 feet of ice cover this winter past.

It is passing under the Blue Water bridges in Port Huron. Canada on the far side of the river that all the great lakes water flows through. Very deep, very strong current in the St Clair River.

Re: Big ships

Thank you all for leaving a comment. I would guess that is the longest lake freighter on the Great Lakes at this time. I grew up watching the lakers go by. Not nearly as many as there used to be. Most were about 800 foot long, then came the first 1000 footer. Now when the engines of a older lakers wears out, they cut that part of the ship off and fit a tug boat in for power. That ship would not fit the locks to get into Lake Superior though. And most of the lakers are now Canadien owned. To go into the St Clair River they need a pilot from Port Huron to Lake Erie, or should say multiple pilots that are certified for a lenght of river, knowing every bend and shallow. Our river bank has been hit by a ship many times but not lately. We can park our cars within 20 feet of the river to boat watch. a jogging path there also, 3 miles along the river.

Spent a hour and a half on the river yesterday.

Also saw two guys in kayaks out there and two others on a flat board, they stood up with a long oar to steer with. It was in the low 50's (F) and not very warm at all.
