Is there anywhere I can seek non traditional build homes on line ? I am finding a few on right move and zoopla but they are few and far between. Just wondered if there is any where specialises in them ?

Re: Homes of non standard construction

Julie, do you mean 'non standard construction'? Here 'traditional' refers to generally older houses with solid walls. Modern houses are mostly 'Jerry built' with wooden frames and a single brick skin, and would not be considered 'traditional'.

Non-standard takes in things like 'pre fabricated' houses or ones not built with traditional materials eg brick & slate. The problem is that they are generally not suitable for mortgage, so I think that many are sold by auction to cash buyers, rather than through estate agents.

Have a look at property auctions - you may have more luck there.

What is it that you are seeking exactly?

Wooden or concrete or anything not bricks and mortar really, we have both lived in wooden houses when we were younger and fancy getting back to that simplicity. We see fewer and fewer of the old wooden houses and bungalows as builders buy them up and develop the pots into huge 4 bed homes and were hoping to get one we could give a little love to and bring back to life without knocking it down.
We are hoping something cheap and cheerful with a decent garden if we can beat the builders to it !

Re: Homes of non standard construction

I wish you well in your quest, but you've already recognised a major hurdle - many of these properties have "development opportunity" written all over them, especially ones with good plots. There is also the issue of a mortgage (if you needed one)

No use to you, but in the next hamlet along, the old stone built village hall, sitting in about 1/4 acre, was advertised for £30k and has received planning permission for change of use to a dwelling house. I'm really glad to see it being restored, though it will cost quite a bit to do it properly.

No mortgage we are looking to live as simply as possible and as cheaply, we need a decent plot for growing veggies and possibly chickens (jury is out on them at the moment waiting to see how Steven's knee operation goes to decide how much we can manage to do).

Re: Homes of non standard construction

Quite a few people round here keep chickens, and I built a hopefully fox-proof chicken shed for our friends with the market garden. I've learned a lot about growing vegetables and a bit about keeping livestock. It does occupy your time, and you experience setbacks, but the rewards are pretty good.

Good luck in your search. Are you planning to stay in Surrey, or are you looking further afield?

Re: Homes of non standard construction

The problem is that "non standard" from a bygone era these days usually equates to cold and damp and expensive to run and maintain, and that is why that type of property are usually knocked down and redeveloped.

I suppose it all depends on how much discomfort you are prepared to live with, but the romantic notion of things always being better in the past is very rarely true. Why not live in abject modern comfort and get an allotment to assuage your "back to basics" living off the land dreams, bearing in mind that you are probably not as hardy as you once were...
