Cups & Saucers

I must tell you something that tickled me yesterday.
I was having lunch at a garden centre, and asked for a small Latte coffee to go with my pannini. The young girl serving me put a saucer on my tray and then went to make the coffee.
She came back with a nice hot cup of coffee and placed it on the tray next to the saucer, instead of on it.
When I went to move the cup onto the saucer the girl said -

"The cups don't fit the saucers." I had to laugh and asked "well surely its a bit pointless me carrying a tray back to my table with an empty saucer? Why give me the saucer in the first place if the cups don't fit it?" She couldn't answer, she just said "Oh yeah" .....

Wouldn't have happened back in our day, Sales staff would have improvised, without any official training.

I know, but she was only a youngster and a sweet girl. It just tickled me why she gave me a saucer that was of no use whatsoever.

My granddad used to pour his tea from the cup into the saucer - now that's odd

Well blow me Patsy, my Nan always used to do that as well. She used to tip her tea into the saucer, blow on it to cool it, then drink it down.
