How to drink a yard of ale.
There is often competitions in our pubs for drinking a yard of ale. I was about 40 at the time and had often seen this long glass tube with a bulb at one end and a funnel at the other end, hanging on the pub wall. An old lady had said to me, " if you ever have a go at that make sure you keep rotating the tube or you will pour it all over yourself as you tip the tube up "Well, I know how clever these old ladies can be, so I made a mental note.
One night I was in a London pub near Kilburn when the opportunity raised it's head. " Anyone want a go at the yard of ale then " the landlord shouted, there was an uncomfortable silence as he waved the long tube around. He got to me and I said " I'll give it a go " the landlord smiled and said you have to pay for the ale to fill it but if you drink it all without spilling it, you get a free bottle of whishy.
Magic ! I thought, lets have a go. They filled it up and charged me for two and a half pints.
I started to tip it up holding the tube with both hands and rotating it slowly. It was quite easy to drink as long as you drank slowly and did not rush it. I had to tip it up high to empty the last bit in the ball, but when I did I was met with thunderous applause.
Everone stood and was clapping, I smiled back at them took my prize and walked out of the pub in case I was invited to do it again.
What a great old lady !

In 1953 a world record for drinking a yard of ale was set at Oxford University by Rhodes Scholar Robert James Lee Hawke who drank it in 11 seconds according to the Guiness Book of Records.Bob Hawke became the 23rd Prime Minister of Australia 1983 to 1991, Australia's third-longest-serving Prime Minister.
Even at 84 he can still scull with the best of them

I hate beer and have trouble drinking a glass of anything without pausing for breath .

When I was 22 I worked for Whitbreads at their brewery in Leeds.I was not a big drinker but you could drink as much as you wanted
whilst you were at work.
One Christmas we had a party which was free and well stocked with
food. As office staff we were given champagne as well as a 5
course meal.
Yes its coming believe me. Someone said lets do a yard of ale.
I was volunteered as well as another woman and a man from the
offices.
I remember being bleary eyed already when the yard of ale was put
to my mouth. I remember it being held by others and I was like
a sunarmi coming towards my mouth and nose. Getting drunk just
thinking about it now.
No one told me to twirl the glass around and I just gulped and gulped
to get it down me. No one told me I could stop
I had a lift home and when I got home my Mum said did you enjoy
yourself. I said I feel really tired and she put a blanket over me and
I woke up hours later sat upright in the lounge alone.
Never again but at my age I don't think I would survive it this time

I think this is terrible, when I was going to rascally parties in my twenties and thirties the guys would do mad things but the girls would be looked after like princesses. There was often more girls than guys but we looked after them all, nobody had to drink anything but obviously the guys were always up for daft persuits like boat races and who could drink a pint the fastest. I remember on one occassion a girl I like was a bit worse for wear and said her mum would give her some stick if she went home in that condition. I decided to take her home with me after she told her mum she was staying with a girlfriend. My wife was surprised when we came home together, but understood when I explained what had happened. She spend the night in our spare room and we all became good friends in the future. Having lady friends is wonderful. Ros is now married to a guy in Malaysia.
