Supporting Cast.

We see many photos of popular birds, but i thought i would put up a few images of some that tend to be overlooked.

Dunnock, or if you are old enough a Hedge Sparrow. In fact its not a Sparrow at all, its true name is Hedge Accentor and its actually related to the thrushes.

Lesser Whitethroat, the much more obvious Common Whitethroat is very vocal and showy during Spring and Summer, but these guys are more skulking and secretive and harder to see and hear.

Stock Dove, a beautiful and subtly marked bird compared with the more obvious Woodpigeon. Now on the Amber list of endangered in the UK as are many of our farmland birds.

Cuckoo, very much a Red data bird much in decline in the UK, there are currently 26 species of bird on the Red data list in the UK, Skylark and Lapwing among them.

Re: Supporting Cast.

Lovely pics Nom. I've been trying to remember to put out bird food and nuts in this cold weather for the birds.

Unfortunately I find it difficult to tell the difference between the small birds , except for the robin of course lol.

Re: Supporting Cast.

Lovely photos, Nom, we went to our local RSPB reserve today but the weather was so bad we couldn't see much at all - so had a cuppa instead.

Super photos!
I always worry that feeding birds stops them foraging for natural food, I do feed them every day but, I wonder if the food I give them is what they would eat normally. Would they shop for suet?

Great bird pics. Are they birds that feed in your garden?

Re: Supporting Cast.

Thanks for all the comments everyone, AlbertaS, only the Dunnock would be a garden visitor. The Lesser Whitethroat is found in mature hedgerows, and the Stock Dove in woodland and fields. The Cuckoo is often around reedbeds looking to lay its eggs in Reed and Sedge warbler nests but will take the opportunity with other species.
