Daffodils? In December?

I've just bought two bunches from Morrisons, British daffs. They do look a bit out of place in my vase but it's great to smell spring on their petals. Whatever next?

Gosh I guess poly tunnels can be used to grow anything though.

They were selling them in M&S last week, I didn't look at the price though

Re: Daffodils? In December?

My Mum's birthday was 23rd December and my Dad always tried to get her Daffodils on that date.I now put Daffodils on their grave on this date. It's only been about three or four times in the past 30 years that I have not been able to get them on this date. The blooms are not so big as the ones in the Spring as they're "forced" to flower.

I wouldn't buy them just yet, though I know Mum always liked them early.
I've still got plenty of colour indoors from pots of Cyclamen, Christmas cactus, African violets, Amaryllis and Hyacinths - all in flower, I love 'em.
There is no need to force these daffs on so early IMO.

The circle of the year seems to be spinning faster and faster, I don't think I want spring before Christmas.
I don't really want daffodils for a few more months at least.

There are some bushes near me that have pink blossom appearing on them, which I've never noticed at this time in any other year.

There are two new born lambs in the field poor little things with the whole winter before them . They should arrive with the daffodils.

Re: Daffodils? In December?

The farmers seem to breed their ewes earlier every year, don't they. I agree it seems all wrong with the worst of the winter to come yet. I read the other day we might have a month of snow in Jan/Feb. If that does happen, the news will be all about lambs buried in snow drifts again.
I suppose its all about money again though. Early season lambs fetch a good price, and should be fat enough to sell off for Easter if born early enough.
