Christmas party rip offs

Festive party nights seem to end up with hotels and pubs charging expensive rates for a night out leading up to Christmas. Our work night out was at a posher pub last night. In Glasgow, The Corinthian. After walking up five floors of stairs, to be greeted by a tiny glass of cheap plonk. Then served a small bowl of practically tasteless soup. Then small portion of turkey with few trimmings. Tiny chocolate cup desert. Cheap cracker with yet another plastic paperclip. £39.99 the lot. Adding to that £6.45per glass of wine. I know that's not the most expensive, but the owners must be laughing all the way to the bank after Christmas. Doubt it would've cost more than a fiver.

Re: Christmas party rip offs

I know what you mean alice, we“ve been to more than a few of these "rip off" events, it happens here in Spain too. The times we have been out for Christmas dinner here (English establishments) and had rubbish food, dreadful service and been well and truly ripped off. We no longer even consider going out for Christmas "events". We are a very mixed bunch of nationalities in our area and the last couple of years our closer friends and neighbours come to us for Christmas dinner, they all bring one of their own national Christmas foods (not asked for I add) and we usally end up with between 15/25 people here for dinner in the evening. It“s always fun with so many languages and mis-interpretations but somehow or other there never seems to be a problem. We will be doing the same this year, it does tend to get a bit manic but everyone obviously enjoys it, they“ve already started asking me if they are invited and what time do they need to be here, haha. Christmas eve we are all invited to one of their houses as the majority of the Germans, Fins, Norwegians, Swedes etc celebrate on Christmas eve not Christmas day. It“s hard to keep up with who does what on what day but going out to the bars and restaurants has now become a thing of the past, I think everyone is fed up of being ripped off.

Re: Christmas party rip offs

Ive only ever been to one such event, rip off, poor quality food, and service.

Once bitten twice shy, part of the ethic of business these days, grab what you can and as much as you can get away with. Had some great get together s with like minded friends, who mucked in with food drink and entertainment, more relaxing. Is the Corinthian one of these new type pubs Alice, cant remember it from my times working in Glasgow ?

A huge impressive building, it used to be the sheriff court Nom, in Ingram Street.

Ingram street rings a bell Alice, just been trying to think of the pub at the top of Sauchiehall street that used to have live music on Saturday lunch times, big band formed by members of classical orchestras and BBC Scotland musicians.

An informal jam session everything from classics to swing and jazz, fun day and i heard they did it just for a few pints.

Re: Christmas party rip offs

I can feel my BP rising at `rip off`s. In 2006 I sold some of my more better performing shares and suggested me and Jenny went to India for Christmas.

The gala dinner was a non optional extra and very pricey. Hey ho we thought it must be quite a do-Jenny buys an outfit and two pairs on new shoes.

What did we get???-golf carts down to the beach,no free drinks(in fact they had been put up)average food and the constant boom boom boom of dance music so loud I could not think. Jenny never did wear those shoes nor that outfit. They went to a charity shop after she passed away

Re: Christmas party rip offs

I went to a pub last night for my sisters birthday. She
had hired a room upstairs. The food cost £8 per person for a buffet
and the bottle of wine was £17.50.
Annoys me these wine charges especially when you can get a nice
bottle at the supermarket for £5 or £6.
Wont be going to a Christmas party this year but will go have a Christmas
lunch at Wetherspoons think its about £8.

I love Wetherspoons BE. Great value.

Nearer Christmas my partner and I will go to our local where the food is cheap and delicious. A bottle of wine is £9. Then we'll stagger the ten minutes walk home
