Why do Greeks break plates?

After watching Strictly and the Greek dance routine, I wondered WHY do Greeks break plates! Its a waste of a lot of plates IMO!

At the Romanian wedding, the couple were greeted just outside the venue with a glass of champagne, which they drank first and then had the glass smashing after, before proceeding into the hall.
Spoilsports lol, the guests weren't invited to smash a glass!!
