Is your Council offering a free Christmas dinner for the over 60s?

Ours is. Was a struggle getting through on the phone when the line opened on 20 Oct, but I managed it, and have two allotment friends coming with me. We are on the evening setting, 6.30 - 8, at our local Assembly Hall, 2nd December. Confirmation letter arrived yesterday, so we are all very pleased and excited.

I'd never realised it before. When I reached 60 I was happy to start reaping 'benefits' and didn't have a clue the Council did this.

Would be nice if they decorate the Hall for the occasion.

What a waste of money. I would certainly complain if our high council tax was spent in this way!

Surely councils should have better things to spend their money on than giving a Christmas Dinner to ALL OAPs, many of whom can afford their own!

Being able to afford it is not the point. The Council said last year's was successful so are repeating it. But I don't know when this started. Personally I think it's a wonderful gesture.

They are probably managing their finances well. We've not had a rise in Council Tax for a good few years.

If I knew which council it was I would be highlighting this crazy nonsense to the hard pressed council tax payers, I don't think they would be too impressed!

There would be lots of complaints here too.
The Council are closing down a lot of places because of the running costs, libraries, care centres and such, there would be riots in the streets if they gave away free Christmas meals.
