For those who don't know

The place is crumbling due to the reinforced steel rusting inside the concrete suffering from the salt air. This is one of the reasons it was closed down

I wondered why it was shut down - could do with a new prison over here .....

Lovely pictures Realspeed, brought back memories of when we visited.
Only thing I found the hill to get up ,after we left the boat , puffed me.

Little that is not known about Alcatraz, so I was told, there were also cells below ground which often had water in them so prisoners could not even lie on the floor.

You won't find this in any guide books or anywhere else but a tour guide on a trip we went on actually was in the film made of the escape and on screen as the prisoner in the next cell , he was the one that told us.

Remember these prisoners were also tormented by the sound of female laughter with women enjoying themselves across the bay on the SF waterfront
