Grammar. Feet or Foot?

I have always wondered what is the proper grammar as laid down in stone by our forefathers, on the correct ways to state some of the following. “The man was at least six FEET tall” why then do they say “He was a six FOOTER?” although it doesn’t sound right he should be a six FEETER.
“I paid £200 POUNDS for that lawnmower” and “It’s a £200 POUND lawnmower” should that not be, it’s a £200 POUNDS lawnmower?
“He wears $1,000 DOLLAR suits” and “That suit cost him £1,000 DOLLARS” should that not be he wears $1,000 DOLLARS suits.
I’m getting a headache now.

Good question Jem. Don't think about it too deeply or your headache will get worse!
I think it's just one of the many quirks of the English language.

I think the difference is because you are changing the words
from a passive to an active sentance.
I paid $200 for that suit is active but It was a $200 suit is passive.
Great language is English.
One of the hardest ones to learn. Thank goodness we went to school

Hard to learn is the least of it, take one simple three letter word 'ROW' and although it's spelt the same it means three completely different things, try explaining that to a chap from Mars.

How come if you have 2 mice its not 2 mouses or why do North Americans say Hood & Trunk for the car & you guys say Boot & Bonnet? Where did those terms come from? Why do elephants have trunks but you can't store your clothes in one?
Why do grass & weed mean the same thing when grass isn't considered a weed?
The questions in life are endless....hmmm........
