Second hand furniture

I've just spent the biggest part of the day trying to dispose of a lovely dining table with four chairs. It came from my previous house as there was a dining room there.

I've phoned numerous second hand furniture charities, only to be told they are inundated with tables and chairs!! In the end I had to take it to the local authority recycling centre, where we had to chuck it in a skip. I spoke to the attendant and asked him if there was any chance of someone in need coming along and taking it and was told that it was out of the question to do that. Also, employees would get the sack if they were to take it home.. Yeh, it comes out of the manager's own pocket. Bloody ridiculous.

I tried everything. Is this the result of living in the world of Ikea and the likes. Where you can change your furniture and colour schemes at the drop of a hat?

What a terrible waste.

Re: Second hand furniture

Alice, I had exactly the same problem when we moved here - an extendable table with six matching chairs, all in excellent condition.

We ended up giving it to charity................ so at least in this case, someone would benefit from it.

Gwyn I tried to give it away, but as I said I was told they were inundated with tables and chairs!! Mines was an extendable table with four lovely matching chairs, in perfect condition. No one was interested, but what a waste.

Have you heard of "Freecycle" Alice. Our area has one on the internet where you put up items you are prepared to give away and someone who needs that item fetches it from you. I used it once for a small electric oven and someone fetched it the very next day. At least good stuff gets used.

Re: Second hand furniture

I can understand how you feel, Alice, it seems such a waste just to throw out a good piece of furniture. I phone the YMCA and someone comes out and collects it they have a charity shop but also a warehouse where they can store things like that for people who need them. I don't think they have them left on their hands for long.
