Dog eat dog

What an unpleasant expression. Anyone know the origins of this phrase?

Re: Dog eat dog

I actually looked this up not too long ago.
Originally it was 'dog does not eat dog'.

Let me find the site for you....

Here ya go:

They referenced good sources, so I would assume it's reliable info!

Re: Dog eat dog

"There's more than one way to skin a cat" i do know this one, it refers to the skinning of catfish and not your beloved felines my friends so rest easy, but the poor fish don't get a look in does it?
Maybe that's where the other old saying comes from, "Making fish of one and flesh of the other" implying favouritism.

Re: Dog eat dog

I'm not so sure about that one.. If it referred to a catfish, it would say "catfish". There seems to be a number of variants of this.. a popular one being "There are more ways of killing a cat than choking it with cream." - this was quoted in the book "Westward Ho!"

I think that the expression "Dog eat dog" may refer back to dog fighting and in a setting it means to be agressively competitive.
