Different Spelling?

I've noticed the word "whingers" & it makes me chuckle, no offence Is it "whiners" because that's how we spell it.

I guess, like words with 'ou' instead of 'o', 'neighbourhood' 'favourite', etc. Many people especially the States spell with just 'o'. I like 'ou', it looks prettier so I keep changing it on my phone, lol, as it reverts back to 'o'.

Silly rilly

The Americans have been wrecking the English language for years AC.

Hey! EZ! Get back to the Games Section!

Yes, we spell jewellery like that but I do wish it was jewelry, because its how it's said, not 'jew-well-ery' which is how it looks.

We also spell 'cheques' like that, not 'checks' as in writing a cheque for someone.

That's the French creeping in but "vive la difference". Hope I got that right

AC you may find this thread, which was started by our late US member, Dandysmom (Eileen) interesting ..... it's titled "UK - US different word, same meaning"

http://www.over50sforum.com/showthread.php?t=6058

Do you use the same words in Canada?

Yes, I scanned it & all the same. We're all one continent, drive anywhere within U.S. & Canada & aside from the odd spellings or odd word, everything is the same.

:

No, Autumn, whining and whinging are two separate words.

whine
noun:

1.
a long, high-pitched complaining cry.
"the dog gave a small whine"

2. a complaining tone of voice.
"there was a hint of a whine in Anna's voice"
vices"
3. a mechanical sound - a whining lift (elevator)

Whinge

1. Verb
complain persistently and in a peevish or irritating way.

2. Noun

an act of complaining persistently and peevishly.

Whining can be a mechanical sound - whinging is always human !

Re: Different Spelling?

The different spelling thing must be going on for a long time now, could it be even from the war of independence?, I might be wrong but I think it was around that time Americans started to ride on the right hand side of the road.
I remember reading a Sherlock Holmes short story set in the 1890's and the villain was an American, found out by his spelling of the word "Plough" the American chap spelt it "Plow"
