My son is 40 today

"I feel old Dad" said he accusingly to me.

"How do you think I feel, I'm the father of a 40 year old" I replied.

We both laughed. My grandson was with us & he was born on my 50th birthday. He'll be 16 shortly & went to his PROM last night.
This is one of the few AMERICAN imports I approve of. Whisked off in a vintage car in his new suit, he looked the business.

ANYWAY, does anyone feel they'd like to offer advice to a 40 year old in 2014, how did you react to being 40, did you have any advice , what would you have done differently?

40 was quite uneventful, 50 floored me, never expected to make it that far, never been the same since, advice, just hang in there, and don't think too much.

Robert I can't remember being 40, I am in my 60's and it seems a very long time ago
My son is 36 and he is the one who gives advice these days..

Re: My son is 40 today

We've got one who is 44 shortly - nobody really said much on his 40th and his path was more or less set.

It's our daughter's 40th next month and she's not taking growing older gracefully to be honest.

My 40th coincided with a period in my life where everything was turned upside down again but I'd had a good, stable job for three years - an achievement in itself for me - plus I'd made the decision that I should be paying into a Pension since 1989, which turned out to be a very wise decision.

My advice is the same as I give my grandchildren, and the children if they listen, and that's do the best you can with the abilities that you have and be always be honest and true to yourself.

When it comes to financial matters I told our kids how important it was not to rely on a State Pension in the future but they haven't heeded that so I'm directing my attention now to the grandchildren.

Only our daughter's actually buying her own flat.

The others are just scraping by all the time with little prospect of ever being home owners; in one case it's mainly due to massive debts run up with Credit Cards, despite our constant warnings!

Unfortunately, the world's different know since 1991 when I turned 40 so whatever advice you give just be honest.

It's going to be harder for them and they've got to learn that the things they will actually need are more important than the things they would like. stevmk2

Re: My son is 40 today

My twins were 40 last year and I think I aged that day when it all sank in!

Being 40 myself was quite uneventful as I didn't feel any different in myself, in fact I still don't feel my age nowadays

When I reached 50, it did cross my mind that I was half a century old ..... but then the thought was gone!

Many congratulations to your son, Robert!
