During Major's premiership the Government established the Commission for the Rights of Trade Union Members (CROTUM). The Woman Civil Servant apppointed as the first Commissioner was very quickly one very busy lady and wanted a deputy, which would then make her the Senior Commissioner. No-one checked the acronym.


To emphasise its 'independence' from (what was then the Department of Social Security and is now the Department of Work & Pensions) they wanted to call it 'The Independent Tribunal Service' again no-one checked the acronym.
