Many, many years ago, when I was young and in love, my ex-husband was an ardent football supporter but it drove me mad.
One day he said he would take me to a match, and I naively thought maybe I should make an effort to learn, so off we went. In the half-time, a bloke ran across the pitch and next thing I knew was this beautiful German Shepherd was released and gave chase. Suddenly, the man got out a gun and started firing at the dog. I was standing up in my seat shouting, and beside myself with fear that this beautiful, brave dog was about to be shot right in front of my eyes. I was also so angry that no one was doing anything to stop it. My husband kept trying to pull me back down on my seat and was telling me to shut up and sit down! I was crying by then!
Eventually he told me it was only a demonstration, and when I looked round, everyone was looking at me.
I felt so stupid, but there was no announcement beforehand or anything, so I thought it was all for real.

My husband never took me to any more matches. . . . .

I'd have reacted exactly the same and to be excluded from further matches would have been a bonus

I will be watching the England matches and see what a poor show they put on.( I do hope I'm wrong in that last comment).

Yes, I'll be watching them too. Don't normally watch football but I get all hopelessly patriotic at these events, and of course we will be hopeless. Isn't that a given

Re: 2014 World Cup

If God created a more banal pastime than cricket it must have been football. I can neither stand nor understand the manic hysteria that accompanies twenty two big girls blouses chasing around a field after an inflated pig's bladder, although I must admit that I do find it amusing to see them weep like children when they lose....

Mups - Who won the match then

Love Footie and will be watching it.
England will get through the first rounds and the Young lads we have at the moment will be great.
I get withdrawal symptoms at the moment of no Footie on the TV so
its going to be great to have a bonus 4 weeks of it, then it starts
again in August.
