Labour Day/Thanksgiving in the UK?

Does the UK include these days during the year?

In Canada Labour Day is always the 1st weekend of September & the last long weekend for kids who have to go back to school on the Tuesday.

Thanksgiving is around Oct 9/10 area.

Labour day in NSW is always the first Monday in October but it is just another public holiday, definitely not equivalent to Thanksgiving though.

Re: Labour Day/Thanksgiving in the UK?

Our 'Labour Day' is 1st Monday in May following the majority of the world who do celebrate 'International' Labour Day'. However, because of its political connotations, the Americans and those governments to the political 'right' would have apoplexy if they allowed their workers to celebrate all at the same time., so America and now obviously Canada use different dates in the year to celebrate 'Labour' day.

It hasn't been called that in a while UJ it's the Early May bank holiday now. Think it changed under labour government they showed their complete disdain for the working classes I thought.

May 1st was never a Bank holiday till the Wilson Gov made it one.

Quote

In 1889, the International Socialist Congress designated 1 May as a day to honour workers. After World War II, leaders in the Soviet Union embraced the new holiday and the annual parade in Moscow's Red Square became known for its display of the country's military strength. In Britain the day was introduced as a bank holiday by the Secretary of State for Employment, Michael Foot.

Un Quote.

Joe, me old pal, me old beauty, Labour Day in Australia has its origins in the 19th Century and the 8 hour day movement (8 hours work, 8 hours play, 8 hours sleep) not any Johnny Come Lately scheme from the defunct Soviet Union or the UK. Britain as usual well behind the rest of the world in industrial matters

Yes darlin' - so it may have - but as I stated, the political implications of aligning with the rest of the world and recognising - 'International Labour Day' on 1st May, was a step too far both for the paranoid Americans and the conservative Canadian Governments.
