Just noticed this

is this the usual amount of 'guests' and why don't they just join?

Because many of them are bots looking to catalogue stuff for google etc. Not real people at all.

Guests are made up of all sorts of visitors

Some are 'bots' that trawl through the web, such as the Googlebot, some are members who are just catching up but don't want to log in, and others are people who have found the site via a search (or another link on the web) and are going to a specific thread for information or just a browse.
